GATE
GATE: Governor's Academy for Teaching Excellence
GATE is a free three-week summer educational program for talented Texas high school students who are interested in teaching careersespecially in the fields of mathematics and/or science at the elementary or secondary levels. Students who participate will spend three weeks on the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi enriching their educational skills, interacting with other talented teens, and learning from experienced master teachers.
Students participating in GATE will enroll in a full-credit university-level teacher education course, which can give them a head start on earning college credit and preparing for the professional world. The program includes field trips, films, guest speakers, mentorship from exceptional educators, and firsthand teaching experience in our "Kid's College," a summer program for elementary students. In addition, students will design a leadership project addressing an educational need in his/her home school district.
GATE takes place on the beautiful island campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The campus is home to state-of-the-art facilities, recreation, and a nationally-known and respected college of education. GATE students live in university housing during their stay on campus. Resident advisors and mentor teachers supervise and mentor participating students at all times. In addition to tuition, the program covers the costs of food, lodging, and instructional materials. Need-based travel stipends are available for participants who express need. Additionally, GATE covers travel costs for qualifying students traveling more than 100 miles to Corpus Christi.
